Lore:

Equestria is named Ethoria, or, it originally was in this AU. In the current timeline, it's named DreadSpire, which will be explained later. Lovendel, (canonically it's known as ponyville but the og names never existed in this AU), is now known as Diethermenos, and is closed off by a dark force, keeping the people who live there inside. Canterlot, which in this AU was known as 'The Big City,' was destroyed, its ruins being abandoned along with the remains of the people who once lived there.

The reason for all of this? King Sombra. Celestia and Luna never existed in this universe, Sombra being the ruler. Twilight is his student and his pupil, being stoic, silent, and observant. King Sombra eventually takes Twilight into Dietharmenos to help her understand what power and control can achieve. She stands beside him, watching silently, like always, when she notices a group of five girls among the crowd.

After getting to know the girls, she starts to become happier and understand what the feeling of support and care is like. Sombra notices, and decides to use this against her, manipulating her once again to be pulled into his "care" and "understanding."
